Two people from Hamilton Township were arrested after they kidnapped three children from a home in Egg Harbor Township, police say.
A judge on Tuesday decided that the children of Julie Craig, ages 14, 5 and 2, would be removed from the care of family members by the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency after Craig failed to comply with a judge’s orders, Egg Harbor Township police say.
At 5:33 p.m. that day, township police say they responded to a home in Steeplechase Village after Craig, 37, and Tyrone Payne, 42, removed the children from the residence before the Division of Child Protection and Permanency could respond.
State Police, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office and officers from Egg Harbor and Hamilton townships searched for the children for several hours before they were found safe in Buena and were turned over to the child-protection division. Craig and Payne were arrested at their home in Hamilton Township, police said.
Craig and Payne were both charged with interference with custody and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. They were lodged in the Atlantic County jail on $25,000 bail.
